When we first moved in, our dining room was a statement piece… but not a good one. Our dining room is the first thing you see when you walk through the front door. The walls were a pastel green and a mural of vines and birds stretched from wall to wall (and even on to the ceiling).
Needless to say, this was one of our first projects once we moved in. Surprisingly, it was also one of the less expensive parts of the renovation, because it was mainly cosmetic. We chose to shiplap the wall and update the trim. We got a few quotes to shiplap the entire room and found that it would have cost us several thousand dollars. Luckily, our friends Katelyn and Derek had just put up shiplap at their home and were willing to teach us and lend a hand during the process. With a few tools and some awesome friends, we knocked out the shiplap in no time for far less than we would have paid a professional. My husband, Patrick, took this knowledge and has put up shiplap in the majority of our basement and also put up trim throughout the house. This has saved us so much money along the way! As a new statement piece, but this time a good one, we added a rustic beaded chandelier. I love that it is one of the first things you notice when you walk through the front door.
With the shiplap and chandelier in place, now it was time to fill the room with furniture and decor. We used our old dining room table, benches, settees, and console table. We got all of these items from Scott Antique Market. If you live in the Atlanta area, the Market is open the second weekend of every month. Vendors from across the Southeast set up in two gigantic warehouses from Thursday to Sunday. I highly recommend if you live in Georgia or any surrounding state that you make a road trip to Atlanta for the weekend for this event. Also, on Sundays the vendors are more willing to negotiate pricing, so they do not have to haul back un-purchased items.
On the console table, I decided to keep it simple. I put two Target wood lamps with burlap shades anchored by a Salvaged Chic Market sign. What is great about Salvaged Chic Market is that all of Heather’s work is hand-crafted! Above the sign, I added a Wreath Topped Windowpane Wall Plaque from Kirkland’s.
For those of you who are interested, our shiplap color is Sherwin Williams Extra White, which matches our trim color. With this, I found it to be important to add some rustic elements to keep balance in the room since it is a very bright white.
*Helpful hint- when choosing a white paint color for a room, I think it is very important to determine how much natural light that room receives. The more natural light, the brighter the painter color will appear!
On the far side of the room, we have a short 5 ft wall. I thought it would be fun to add a small distressed ivory pew bench from Kirkland’s. Above this, I hung a metal wall planter (lucky find from HomeGoods) and filled it with artificial flowers from Hobby Lobby. Above the flowers, I hung a metal Farmhouse sign my sweet mother-in-law got me from Scott Antique Market (I have linked a similar option for you here). I love the way that this small space came together and complimented the rest of the dining room.
