Hi y’all! There are many new faces on my blog and Instagram, so I wanted to reshare the details of my living room renovation. For those of you that are new, we did a huge renovation on our 1990’s Cape Cod style home. We added onto our living room by converting our screened in porch into part of our living room space. With this, we were able to add a white brick fireplace, wood beams, and large windows overlooking a beautiful lake our property backs up to.
Recap of Important Details:
Flooring: Hardwoods stained 50% Minwax Dark Walnut, & 50% Minwax Classic Grey
Fireplace: Painted White Dove by Benjamin Moore; faux wood mantel from Wayfair
Wall Paint Color: Agreeable Grey by Sherwin Williams
Trim Paint Color: Extra White by Sherwin Williams
Beams Stain Color: Minwax Golden Oak
Below is the original blog post detailing the living room renovation. Please let me know if you have any questions!
Living Room Renovation (prior post):
The living room is where everything began. Originally, we were going to convert our screened-in porch to expand our living room. As you can tell from our previous blog posts, we did not stop there! One of the biggest reasons for the addition was that I absolutely had to have a fireplace and the existing layout of the house would not allow for that.
The original layout of the living room was long, narrow and had minimal natural sunlight. Also, there were two closet sized rooms at the end of the living room that did not have much function other than for a mini office / storage space. The walls were a pastel green and the carpet was in need of replacing.
The first step during the renovation was enclosing the screened-in porch. As with most renovations you see these days, we elected for an open concept living room. So, the next task was to knock down existing walls. The biggest wall that needed removing was the exterior wall leading to the screened-in porch. Lastly, once everything was opened and the screened-in porch was closed in, we added all the finishes, including the fireplace. As you may guess, it was a little more involved than this, but I don’t want to bore you with all the little details of the process! If you have any questions about the details, please don’t hesitate to shoot me an email.
As far as the finishes are concerned, I wanted a light, bright, and airy feel with some wood elements. I knew I wanted beams as well as many windows as possible to allow for plenty of natural light. I also wanted as much of a view of the lake as possible. We opted for fixed 6ft tall windows on either side of the fireplace allowing for an unobstructed view. The fireplace is floor to ceiling brick. I chose to paint the brick White Dove by Benjamin Moore at the recommendation from our painter. I got the faux wood mantel from Wayfair in the color honey. Also, the actual fireplace we installed is a prefabricated gas insert. I really love these because with a click of a button, I can turn my fireplace on and off with no hassle. It is also much more cost effective than building a wood burning fireplace.
I chose to paint the walls Agreeable Grey by Sherwin Williams, just like the rest of our house. The beams in the living room are stained with Minwax Golden Oak. All of the trim and shiplap are painted Extra White by Sherwin Williams. Our wood floors are stained 50/50 Minwax Classic Grey and Dark Walnut, which I think is a great combination.
Our décor in our living room is still a work in progress. I still have bare walls and tables, so I will be sharing more of the decorating process as we finish each space. For now, I will give you details on what we have. For furniture, we took advantage of a sale at Ashley Furniture and got our couches, love seats, and poufs. Our wood coffee table was a Scott Antique Market find, which by the way, is happening this weekend in Atlanta if you are interested in checking it out! My console table under my T.V. is from Nadeau in Buckhead. There are about 40 locations throughout the country. Our Jute rug is 12 ft x 15 ft and is from RugsUSA. It is honestly my favorite rug we are have ever owned. It does not shed and holds up against our two kids and large Golden Retriever.
